Maybe by Hilary Walker
They happen from time to time
envisioned ‘never meant to be’ romances
Clandestine peccadilloes
born from a lingering glance or surreptitious smile
Certain recognition where nothing is said and
everything is possible
A silent meeting of minds peppered with feelings of surprise
when perceived mutual attraction appears to disarm us.
What to do ---well…mostly, we do nothing.
We imagine, and then we dismiss our imaginings
We pretend, and then we tell ourselves we were mistaken
But still, we create a haven in our mind’s eye to analyse,
to explore, to take a breath and hold on to this feeling
To ponder on the prospect of ‘what might have been’
replaying over and over a moment in time with excited eagerness,
secretly acknowledging the delicious possibilities of maybe.
